Pharmacy Calculations 3
This eight-part eLearning program addresses weight-volume (w/v), weight-weight (w/w), and volume-volume (v/v) relationships using three calculation methods: the concentration-volume equation (C1V1 = C2V2), the ratio and proportion method, and the dimensional analysis method.
PHARMACY CALCULATIONS 3 – PERCENT WEIGHT-VOLUME, WEIGHT-WEIGHT, AND VOLUME-VOLUME RELATIONSHIPS
Pharmacy compounding often involves dissolving a solute (i.e., the active pharmaceutical ingredient) inside a solvent (i.e., the base) to prepare a final homogenous mixture, known as a solution. The appropriate use of concentration expressions, such as weight-volume (w/v), weight-weight (w/w), and volume-volume (v/v), is vital for determining accurate solute and solvent amounts for a prescribed pharmaceutical preparation.
This multiple-method approach will provide participants with the necessary framework for problem-solving and formulation verification in actual practice. Systematic instructions on how to use these calculation methods are provided through animations and interactive problem-solving exercises to optimize engagement and retention. Completion of this eLearning program will provide participants with the confidence to accurately apply these essential pharmaceutical calculations in their day-to-day compounding practice.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Identify the basic equation for weight-volume (w/v), weight-weight (w/w), and volume-volume (v/v) relationships.
- Understand how to express the basic w/v, w/w, and v/v relationships in fraction and decimal form.
- Recognize the basic w/v, w/w, and v/v expressions as percentages.
- Recognize the reason for the use of w/v, w/w, and v/v expressions in pharmacy practice.
- Solve w/v, w/w, and v/v relationship-type problems using the concentration-volume equation, the ratio and proportion method, and the dimensional analysis method.
