The HEPA filter protects the fan from particle contamination. It is 4-inches high for extended life. Using the proper change method, Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) and properly trained personnel, the filters can be changed flawlessly, with either the Bag-out procedure, with no cross-contamination to either the person or the surrounding.
